For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. Romans 6:6 NIV.
I am friends with someone who identifies his carnal nature by his middle name. His name is George the Auger. His wife named him that. She and others dislike it when he surfaces. I thought that was a good idea. My carnal man got dubbed by my middle name and locale growing up, Philly Thomas. He is a powerful man with strongholds. Watch out when he is around!
Thomas took no guff. He gave as good as he got. Thomas disliked people who couldn’t drive. He believed he had the right to go wherever he wanted without inexperienced people in his way. He got selfish, angry, and wanted his own way. Thomas listened to angry music to feed his anger. He had an attitude that could cut someone down. He even became dangerous sometimes. That is why Thomas needed to die.
Thomas died and got buried. When people call looking for him, I let them know he’s dead. He no longer wants to hurt people. But there are times he attempts to zombie himself out of the grave. When I got robbed, he surfaced. When I don’t pray enough, Thomas loves to appear. If I am not in the Word, Thomas rears his ugly head. His short temper and Philadelphia attitude can arise. He is grumpy, short and moody.
Our old self must die. They must get forced to the cross and crucified. When sin arises in our lives. We must surrender the old self to Jesus. Thomas must die.
We pray that our old selves need to die, Lord. We desire to become more like You. When the old self surfaces, crucify them. Help us be more like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
