‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” Matthew 13:28-30 NIV.
We live in a world of wheat and tares. The parable distinguishes between those who know Jesus and those who don't. They might’ve heard Him but denied His existence. They believe they know better, but the Word says they suppress the truth about their Creator, that He is a reality.
The enemy did this. The devil will place tares among the wheat. We minister to them, but they can cause trouble. They are called Darnel weeds. The exciting part is how darnel comes in among the wheat. It looks like it. It is impossible to distinguish it from the rest of the crop. But there is a distinction.
Wheat bends and darnel stands straight. It will not bow. That is how they decide the difference between wheat and tares. Darnel refuses to bow despite their same appearances.
Jesus revealed the consequences of disbelief in this parable. Eternal separation for all eternity. Even those who deny Him still feel His presence in life. He associates with both the righteous and the wicked. God warns us that denying Him in life leads to disconnection in eternity. He won't force anyone to be in His presence against their will. Like wheat and darnel, God will bundle them and send them away from His presence forever.
Here is another chance to proclaim Jesus as Lord. Don’t be like Darnel. Surrender to Him today. Accept the reality that Jesus is accurate, and He died and rose so we could be with Him forever.
Open hearts today, Lord. Let Your Spirit move in the darkness of hearts. Bring people to the knowledge of salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
